England, Watford, Vicarage Road Stadium

On Saturday, October 17, Watford host Charlton Athletic at Vicarage Road in the 11th round of the Championship. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:30 BST. The hosts enter the game in the relegation zone after four consecutive league defeats, while Charlton travel to Hertfordshire after a dramatic 2-2 draw away to Burnley.

Watford: the pressure is rising after another defensive collapse

Alessio Dionisi remains in charge of Watford, but the Italian coach is under increasing pressure following a disastrous run of results. The Hornets have lost four Championship matches in a row and dropped to 22nd place with only eight points from ten games.

Their last two performances have been particularly alarming. Watford were thrashed 4-0 at home by Burnley before suffering an even heavier 5-1 defeat at Cardiff. Dionisi demanded a reaction after the Burnley loss, but instead his team conceded four times before half-time in Wales. Watford have now allowed 19 league goals this season, with nine of them coming in the last two matches alone.

There have at least been some positive developments regarding the squad. Jordan Zemura, Martín Payero and Omar Traoré have returned and all started against Cardiff, while Soumaïla Coulibaly, Marc Bola and Krépin Diatta are also available. However, Edoardo Bove, Jeremy Ngakia and Kwadwo Baah remain unavailable.

The biggest issue is psychological as much as tactical. Watford still possess enough individual quality in players such as Stephy Mavididi, Myron Boadu and Edo Kayembe, but their defensive structure collapses too easily once something goes wrong. Against a side comfortable playing without the ball and attacking quickly in transition, that fragility could once again become a major problem.

Charlton: no wins, but Nathan Jones' team are difficult to beat

Charlton's recent results are not spectacular either. Nathan Jones' side have now gone seven Championship matches without a victory, but there is one major difference compared with Watford — the Addicks have continued to collect points.

Charlton sit 12th with 14 points from ten matches and have lost only twice. Five of their ten league games have ended in draws, and their latest performance at Burnley was particularly encouraging. The Addicks twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw, with Ivan Mesík equalising in the 96th minute.

The result was not simply a matter of luck. Charlton produced 2.13 expected goals at Turf Moor compared with Burnley's 1.08, had 54% possession and showed that they can create chances away from home. That should give Jones confidence before facing a Watford defence that has looked extremely vulnerable.

Kayne Ramsay and Billy Koumetio returned to the starting eleven against Burnley, strengthening Charlton's defensive options. Collins Sichenje remains unavailable, while Nathaniel Chalobah and Matty Godden have been dealing with injury problems and remain fitness concerns.

Probable lineups

  • Watford: Ravaglia — Traoré, Pollock, Keben, Zemura — Kayembe, Kyprianou — Maamma, Payero, Mavididi — Boadu.
  • Charlton: Okonkwo — Ramsay, Jones, Koumetio — Coventry, Bell, McNamara, Skipp — Campbell, Grant — Leaburn.

Match facts and head-to-head record

  • Watford have lost four consecutive Championship matches.
  • The Hornets have conceded nine goals in their last two games.
  • Charlton have lost only two of their opening ten league matches.
  • Five of Charlton's ten Championship games have ended in draws.
  • Charlton are winless in seven league matches, but have drawn five of them.
  • Watford failed to beat Charlton in either league meeting last season: Charlton won 1-0 at home before the teams drew 1-1 at Vicarage Road.

Watford are too vulnerable to trust: Watford vs Charlton prediction

Charlton's winless run makes an outright away victory unnecessarily risky, but Watford's current condition makes it equally difficult to support the hosts. Four successive defeats, nine goals conceded across the last two matches and another first-half collapse at Cardiff point to a team suffering from serious confidence and defensive problems.

Charlton have been far more resilient. They are drawing too many matches, but that characteristic actually suits this selection. Jones' team showed at Burnley that they can respond after falling behind and create enough opportunities away from home. Against a Watford side struggling badly whenever opponents attack their defensive line with pace, the visitors should have opportunities again.

Protecting the selection against another Charlton draw therefore looks more attractive than backing either side to win outright.

Prediction: Charlton Athletic draw no bet.
