The second round of the DFB-Pokal will bring together VfL Bochum and Mainz 05 at the Ruhrstadion on Tuesday, October 27. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00 CET. Bochum represent the 2. Bundesliga, while Mainz arrive as the top-flight side and therefore carry the favorite's status into this knockout tie.

Bochum: a better performance, but finishing remains a major problem

Uwe Rösler remains in charge of Bochum, but the beginning of the league campaign has been difficult. After nine rounds, the team have eight points and only six league goals, with their home record still without a victory. Before the cup game, Bochum at least produced a much more encouraging performance against Wolfsburg, earning a 1-1 draw after Sean Klaiber equalized in the second half.

Rösler described that display as a clear step forward. Bochum generated 19 attempts against Wolfsburg, although only five were on target, which perfectly illustrates their biggest issue: the team can create pressure but too rarely turns it into goals. Before that match, Bochum had lost 0-1 to Arminia Bielefeld and 0-2 to Kaiserslautern.

There are also personnel concerns. Enis Cokaj had returned to the training pitch before the Wolfsburg match but was not yet ready to play, while Jean Manuel Mbom, Babis Drakas, Philipp Strompf and Oliver Olsen were also unavailable. None of them featured against Wolfsburg.

Bochum have already shown that they can handle a cup battle, eliminating Greuther Fürth 2-1 away from home in the first round. At the Ruhrstadion, the hosts are likely to make this a physical contest, defend aggressively and try to exploit Mainz on transitions and set pieces.

Mainz: strong away performances should provide confidence

Mainz are coached by Urs Fischer and sit seventh in the Bundesliga with ten points after seven rounds. Their latest game ended in a 2-3 home defeat to Werder Bremen, but the result does not tell the whole story: Mainz registered 18 shots, pushed hard for an equalizer in the second half and had several good opportunities to make it 3-3.

More importantly for this fixture, Mainz have looked considerably more convincing away from home. Before losing to Bremen, Fischer's side won 1-0 at Schalke, while their earlier away results included victories at Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hamburg. The contrast between their home problems and their performances on the road has been one of the clearest trends of the opening months of the season.

Mainz also have considerably more attacking depth. Nadiem Amiri and Kaishu Sano control the midfield, Anthony Caci provides a threat from the left, while Phillip Tietz and Sheraldo Becker offer different qualities in the final third. Against Bremen, Paul Nebel, Eric Martel and Benedict Hollerbach were all available from the bench, giving Fischer several options to change the game.

The latest personnel update before the Bremen match listed Dominik Kohr, Silas Katompa Mvumpa, Otto Ruoppi and Robin Zentner as unavailable, although some had already returned to team training. With Zentner absent, Alexander Schwolow continued in goal.

Mainz had no problems in the opening cup round, thrashing VfB Krieschow 9-0. The level of opposition was obviously much lower than Bochum, but the result underlined how seriously Fischer's team approached the competition.

Probable lineups

  • Bochum: Horn – Klaiber, Steinwender, Mets, Wittek – Meyer, Pannewig – Taz, Miyoshi, Holtmann – Hofmann.
  • Mainz: Schwolow – da Costa, Posch, Potulski – Mwene, Sano, Lee Jae-sung, Amiri, Caci – Becker, Tietz.

Match facts and head-to-head record

  • Bochum have scored only six goals in their first nine 2. Bundesliga matches.
  • Bochum are still without a home league victory this season.
  • Mainz have won four of the last five competitive meetings between the teams, with the other ending in a draw.
  • Bochum beat Greuther Fürth 2-1 in the first cup round, while Mainz defeated Krieschow 9-0.

The Bundesliga side should eventually make the difference: Bochum vs Mainz prediction

Bochum's performance against Wolfsburg makes this a more dangerous cup tie for Mainz than the difference between the divisions might suggest. Rösler's team looked intense, created plenty of shooting opportunities and will have the Ruhrstadion behind them. In a knockout match, that should be enough to keep the contest competitive for long periods.

However, Bochum's lack of efficiency remains difficult to ignore. Six league goals in nine matches is a very modest return, and converting pressure into clear chances has repeatedly been a problem.

Mainz have their own defensive issues, as the 2-3 defeat to Bremen showed, but Fischer has the stronger squad, considerably more attacking alternatives and a team that has generally looked much more comfortable away from home than at the MEWA Arena. If Mainz avoid being dragged into a purely physical cup fight, their superiority in midfield and the final third should eventually decide the tie.

Prediction: Mainz to win.
