One of the most interesting fixtures of Primeira Liga Matchday 9 will take place on Monday, October 26, when Santa Clara welcome Benfica to Estádio de São Miguel. Only one point separates the teams before the round: Marco Silva's side sit second with 19 points, while Petit's Santa Clara are fourth with 18. However, the numbers also reveal a significant difference in attacking potential — Benfica have already scored 24 league goals, twice as many as their upcoming opponents.

Santa Clara: impressive defence faces its biggest test

Santa Clara have been one of the main surprises of the opening weeks of the Portuguese season. Petit's team remain unbeaten after eight Primeira Liga matches, recording five victories and three draws while conceding only four goals.

Their defensive organisation is the main reason for such an impressive start. Santa Clara are comfortable defending in a compact block, rarely leave large spaces between the lines and do not need to dominate possession to control the rhythm of a match. Goalkeeper Lucas França has already recorded five clean sheets, while the entire defensive structure has proved difficult to break down.

The Azorean side have also shown they can frustrate strong opponents. They held Braga to a goalless draw and have repeatedly managed to protect narrow advantages. Gonçalo Paciência, meanwhile, provides an important focal point at the other end and has already scored five league goals.

The biggest question is whether the same approach can survive sustained pressure from Benfica. Santa Clara's defensive numbers are excellent, but Marco Silva's side possess considerably more individual quality and attacking depth than most of the teams Petit has faced so far.

Benfica: the attack is beginning to accelerate

Benfica enter the match with the strongest attack in the Primeira Liga. Twenty-four goals in eight rounds gives the Eagles an average of three per game, while their +17 goal difference is also the best in the championship.

More importantly, their recent performances suggest that the attacking mechanisms are working increasingly well. Benfica followed a 2-0 league victory over Vitória Guimarães with consecutive 4-1 European wins against Celtic and Omonia.

The trip to Cyprus was another demonstration of their depth in attack. Benfica continued creating chances after the interval and eventually pulled away from Omonia, with Vangelis Pavlidis, Fredrik Aursnes and Gianluca Prestianni all contributing goals.

Pavlidis remains one of the most important figures in Marco Silva's system. The Greek striker has eight league goals and is the competition's leading scorer, while he and Prestianni have also provided three assists each. Benfica therefore have several ways of hurting opponents — through combinations around the box, wide attacks and aggressive runs into the penalty area.

The squad is not completely free of problems. Enzo Barrenechea, Daniel Banjaqui, Jakub Kamiński and Leandro Barreiro were unavailable for the European trip to Omonia, reducing Marco Silva's rotation options during a demanding part of the schedule. Nevertheless, Benfica have continued to produce results and goals despite those absences.

Benfica traditionally enjoy their trips to the Azores

The head-to-head record makes the visitors even more interesting.

Benfica have never lost an away league match against Santa Clara. Across ten visits to the Azorean club in the Primeira Liga, the Eagles have recorded eight victories and two draws.

The overall league record is similarly convincing, with Benfica winning 16 of the 20 meetings between the clubs. They also won on their most recent visit to Estádio de São Miguel, claiming a 2-1 victory in February 2026.

Several previous meetings have also produced comfortable Benfica victories. The Eagles won 5-0 in the Azores in 2021, 3-0 there in 2023 and have repeatedly demonstrated that once they score the opening goal, Santa Clara can struggle when forced to abandon their compact defensive structure.

Key facts

  • Benfica have scored 24 goals in eight Primeira Liga matches.
  • Santa Clara have conceded only four league goals this season.
  • Benfica have the best goal difference in the championship at +17.
  • Vangelis Pavlidis leads the league scoring chart with eight goals.
  • Benfica have won eight of their ten away league matches against Santa Clara, drawing the other two.
  • Benfica have won 16 of the 20 league meetings between the teams.
  • Marco Silva's side have scored four goals in each of their last two European matches.

Benfica have the weapons to win by more than one goal

Santa Clara's defensive record makes the handicap more demanding than simply backing Benfica to win. Petit has built an organised team, and there is every chance the hosts will spend long periods defending deep and trying to keep the match alive.

However, that scenario could ultimately work in Benfica's favour. Marco Silva's team are capable of maintaining pressure for long periods, possess far more options in the final third and have recently demonstrated an ability to increase the tempo after half-time.

The visitors also need the points in the title race. With Porto setting the pace at the top, dropping points against Santa Clara would make Benfica's task considerably more difficult. That should ensure a focused approach rather than a conservative performance once they take the lead.

Santa Clara may stay competitive for a large part of the evening, but if Benfica score first, the hosts will eventually have to take more risks. That is where the difference in individual quality and attacking depth can become decisive.

A narrow Benfica victory remains possible, which is why the Asian handicap is preferable to a standard two-goal handicap: a one-goal Benfica win returns the stake, while a victory by two or more goals delivers the full win.
