Liverpool's hopes of signing a new midfielder this summer have been dashed, as Martín Zubimendi will not be the first new addition under Arne Slot's management.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Real Sociedad central midfielder has rejected Liverpool's offer, despite earlier reports suggesting an agreement was in place. Zubimendi's release clause stands at £51 million.

Zubimendi, who has a deep affection for his hometown club, has decided to extend his contract with Real Sociedad, even agreeing to a lower salary to remain with the team.

With this decision, Liverpool will now look for other options to strengthen their midfield.

This summer, Zubimendi became a European Champion with Spain, playing in four matches during the Euro 2024 tournament, including 45 minutes in the final against England.

The 25-year-old has spent his entire career at Real Sociedad, making a total of 188 appearances, scoring 8 goals, and providing 7 assists.
