Zimbabwe Targets Sports Betting Boom With New 10% Tax on All Winnings
The Zimbabwean government has introduced a 10% tax on all sports betting winnings as part of its 2025 national budget plans. This tax was announced by Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube during a meeting in Mount Hampden. The goal of this tax is to bring the growing gambling industry under official control and increase the government's income.
From January 1, 2025, this tax will apply to all winnings, no matter how big or small. Minister Ncube explained, "This plan is meant to make sure that people who bet on sports also pay taxes, which helps show how important this activity is in our growing economy."
Sports betting has become very popular in Zimbabwe, especially among younger people. This is because of the increase in online betting sites and places to bet in cities. The government believes this tax will help use the gambling industry's money to support the country's development while making sure everyone pays their fair share.
But there have been conflicting responses to the action. Some see it as a sensible way to increase revenue, while others worry that it would discourage bettors or push them to unregulated sites. Concerns over possible system changes and a decline in casual gambler engagement were also voiced by betting operators.
Despite criticisms, the government emphasized responsible gambling and underscored the need for fiscal discipline to support long-term growth.
