Yoane Wissa reveals the meaning behind his ‘Fimbu’ celebration

For the Congolese striker, this dance is far from being a mere nod to traditional folklore.

Yoane Wissa played a part in Newcastle United’s 2–0 victory over Tottenham on Saturday in matchday 2 of Premier League. The Democratic Republic of Congo international found the back of the net in the 72nd minute with an acrobatic finish, heading home a cross following a corner.

As usual, the Congolese striker celebrated his goal with his ‘Fimbu’ dance. This dance, popularised by players from the DR Congo national team, has become Wissa’s personal trademark for some time now.

Following the Magpies’ victory over Spurs on 29 August, Yoane Wissa spoke in the mixed zone about the significance of this gesture, which he performs every time he scores a goal.

“It’s a dance we like to do in my country (DRC), so every time I score a goal, I use it to pay tribute to my country. It’s my own little way of carrying a piece of where I come from with me onto the pitch.

“So every time I do this celebration, it’s not just a dance. It’s a reminder of where I started and how far I’ve come. If I can score goals and make people back home smile at the same time, then I’ll keep doing it.”
