On Friday, the 39th of March, Xabi Alonso announced that he had decided to remain in the coaching seat of Bayer Leverkusen for at least one more season. With his decision, he thwarted Liverpool's and Bayern Munich's desires to lure him to their teams.

Following his statement, Jurgen Klopp stated that he understood the decision of the Spanish specialist.

Renowned British presenter and commentator Richard Keys accused Alonso of trying to control the situation, but the head coach of the "pharmacists" himself stated that he still had time to make a significant move.

During his conversation with Sky Sports, he said:

"I have endeavored to respect everyone. I have tried to make my own decisions. And now I feel that it is the right choice to stay in this club and continue to improve and develop.

This is my first season as a coach in a professional team, the first season is coming to an end, so I think I still have time to try something.

At the moment, it seems right to me to be here. I am truly happy. The club is excellent. The fans are fantastic. The players are incredible. There are so many reasons to stay."

Alonso has been at the helm of Bayer Leverkusen since October 2022, and last season they finished sixth in the league table. In the current season, the "pharmacists" are demonstrating incredible form, holding a streak of 39 games without defeat in all competitions. The team is on the verge of clinching their first-ever championship title, with 23 victories in 27 matches, and with seven games left in the season, they lead the nearest pursuer and defending champion Bayern Munich by thirteen points.
