Wow! Nick Kyrgios will face Aryna Sabalenka in the 'battle of the sexes' match
Such matches are a true rarity in modern tennis.
Details: Today it was officially announced that a 'battle of the sexes' match between Australia's Nick Kyrgios and world number one Aryna Sabalenka will take place.
The athletes themselves broke the news via their social media accounts.
The highly anticipated showdown is set for December 28 in Dubai, at the Coca-Cola Arena, which boasts a capacity of 17,000 spectators.
Intergender matches have a storied, if rare, history in tennis: back in 1973, perhaps the most famous 'Battle of the Sexes' saw veteran Bobby Riggs take on one of the era’s greatest female players, Billie Jean King. King triumphed, paving the way for equal pay in tennis and, later, equal scholarship opportunities for female athletes at universities.
The clash between Sabalenka and Kyrgios will mark only the three official 'battle of the sexes' match in professional tennis history.
Kyrgios has previously stated he believes he can win against Sabalenka, but admits he is wary of her skills, acknowledging she is in top form.
Reminder: Change at the top: Jannik Sinner returns to No. 1 in ATP rankings
