Axel Witsel is not ready to say goodbye to top-level European football just yet.

Details: According to L'Équipe, experienced Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel has signed with Nice as a free agent this Tuesday. The 37-year-old was available on a free transfer after leaving Girona and will now continue his career in Ligue 1. Nice had accelerated their pursuit of the Belgian following the serious knee injury suffered by Laurent Abergel, and Witsel quickly emerged as an experienced option for the French club's midfield.

The move gives Witsel another opportunity to compete in one of Europe's major championships. During his long career, the Belgian has represented clubs in Belgium, Portugal, Russia, China, Germany and Spain, while his versatility has allowed him to operate both in midfield and in central defence.

It is worth noting that Witsel remains one of the most experienced players in Belgium's history. L'Équipe credits him with 140 appearances and 12 goals for the national team, and he was also part of the Belgian squad at the 2026 World Cup.
