World No. 18 Frances Tiafoe receives record-breaking fine in tennis history
A month ago, American tennis player Frances Tiafoe faced a costly defeat in the Round of 32 at the Shanghai Masters against Roman Safiullin. However, the consequences of this match extended far beyond the court.
Details: Tiafoe expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the officiating by chair umpire Jimmy Pinoargote and displayed unsportsmanlike conduct after the match.
The American player refused to shake hands with the umpire and directed explicit language toward him. As a result of this behavior, Tiafoe has been handed the largest financial penalty in tennis history.
The ATP’s disciplinary committee cited approximately 10 violations committed by Tiafoe during the match. Consequently, he has been fined $120,000.
Despite the severity of the penalty, Tiafoe’s participation in upcoming tournaments remains unaffected. Earlier speculations of a possible suspension have been dismissed.
Reminder: Today, it was officially announced that legendary player Nick Kyrgios is set to make his comeback to professional tennis.
