"Why not 132?" Asian Football Confederation official reacts sharply to World Cup expansion proposal
The 2026 World Cup will see more participants—48 teams instead of the usual 32. However, some are proposing an even greater expansion of the tournament.
Details: According to TyC, CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez suggested increasing the number of World Cup participants to 64 teams. This initiative has sparked a sharp discontent from a representative of the Asian Football Confederation.
Quote: "The number of teams for 2030 is already set at 48, and there is nothing more to discuss here. If we ask for 64, then why not 132? To what absurdity are we willing to go?" he stated.
It is worth noting that initially, it was planned that the opening three matches of the 2030 World Cup would be hosted by Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, with the main part of the tournament taking place in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
Reminder: The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19. For the first time in history, the tournament will be hosted by three countries—Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America.
