Wenger could oust Infantino: Arsenal legend urged to run for FIFA presidency
Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger is being urged to put forward his candidacy for the FIFA presidency and challenge the organisation’s current leader, Gianni Infantino. The Times reports this.
Infantino intends to remain in office, but his position has come under pressure amid disagreements with the leaders of UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC, as well as criticism of FIFA’s leadership.
According to the source, opponents of the current president are hoping to find a serious challenger by 18 November — the deadline for nominating candidates. Wenger, who currently serves as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, is highly respected in the football world and is viewed as a potential contender for the organisation’s top job.
Another potential candidate remains Jordanian Prince Ali bin al-Hussein, who previously challenged Infantino in the 2016 election. Meanwhile, CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani does not plan to enter the race.
Recall that the FIFA presidential election is scheduled for 18 March 2027. Infantino remains the only officially announced candidate so far, but his opponents continue searching for a worthy challenger.
