“We did not succeed defensively.” Xabi Alonso commented on the defeat of Bayer Leverkusen
Yesterday, in the second round of the German Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen let a victory slip through their fingers at home against RB Leipzig. For the defending German champions, this defeat marked their first loss in 35 domestic league matches, with their last Bundesliga defeat dating back to May of last year.
Bayer Leverkusen's head coach, Xabi Alonso, shared his thoughts on the result, emphasizing their defensive shortcomings.
"This game had both positive and negative aspects. In the first half, we played well and aimed to build on that in the second. However, we lost control of the game and gave our opponent too much space. We did not succeed defensively. We must attack and defend together. We will work on this during the international break."
It is worth noting that last season, Bayer Leverkusen maintained an incredible unbeaten streak, with their only defeat coming in the Europa League final against Atalanta (0-3).
After the international break, Bayer's next match will be an away game against Hoffenheim on September 14.
