VIDEO. Ex-Chelsea player's presentation in Brazil breaks stadium attendance record
Chelsea defender Thiago Silva's contract was set to expire at the end of the current season, on June 30. However, in early May, Silva announced that he would leave Chelsea and return to his boyhood club.
Not waiting for his contract to officially end, Silva returned to Brazil and joined Fluminense. Today, the player was officially unveiled.
Thousands of fans gathered at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro to welcome Silva back home. The event set a record for the largest attendance in Brazilian history, with 55,000 supporters in the stands.
Silva originally left Fluminense in 2002, but after playing for several clubs, he returned on loan in 2006 and then secured a permanent transfer the following year. His illustrious career saw him play for Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea.
His last two transfers, to Fluminense and Chelsea, were as a free agent, though PSG paid €42 million for him. At 39 years old, Silva has signed a two-year contract with Fluminense, indicating that he does not plan to retire just yet.
