(VIDEO) Celta coach jokes about defender announcing call-up to Spain national team
Barcelona academy graduate Óscar Mingueza showed great promise, particularly during the 2020/21 season, when he frequently made the starting lineup for the Blaugranas. It was during this time that he earned his first call-up to the Spanish national team.
Mingueza later moved to Celta Vigo, and until this month, he hadn't received any further call-ups to represent Spain. However, his impressive start to the current season convinced Luis de la Fuente to call the 25-year-old defender back into the national squad.
Mingueza learned about this news during a Celta training session, where head coach Claudio Giráldez had a unique way of breaking the news to him:
Coach: "Your attitude in defensive set pieces is a **** disgrace."
Mingueza: "Mine?"
Coach: “What is a **** shame is that Luis de la Fuente called you up for the national team!"
So far this season, Mingueza has scored 2 goals and provided 3 assists in 4 La Liga matches.
The reigning European champions will face Serbia on September 5th in the Nations League, followed by a match against Switzerland on September 8th.
