Van Dijk Reflects on Salah's Iconic Goal and Memorable Man City Encounters Ahead of Anfield Clash
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has recalled some of his most memorable moments from encounters against Manchester City ahead of their Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday. With Liverpool dominating the table, a win would increase their lead over City to 11 points.
Since joining Liverpool in 2018, Van Dijk has played against Manchester City 15 times. In those games, Liverpool has won 6 times, tied 5 times, and lost 4 times. Looking back at some special moments, the Dutch defender remembered Mohamed Salah’s great goal in October 2022. Salah scored after a long pass from Alisson Becker and a mistake from Joao Cancelo. “It was an amazing moment,” said Van Dijk, who also mentioned Fabinho’s long-range strike in the 3-1 win at Anfield in November 2019.
Van Dijk stressed the importance of consistency in maintaining his high level of performance, highlighting the obstacles to maintaining his peak fitness. "It's about taking care of yourself and being ready for every game," he told me.
Van Dijk also praised goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher for his excellent save from Kylian Mbappe in Liverpool's 2-0 Champions League win over Real Madrid. He admired Kelleher’s confidence, whether he had the ball or not.
Recognizing the team's significant collective achievements, Van Dijk emphasized the significance of remaining injury-free and maintaining momentum throughout the season. "We need everyone to be at their best," he said.
