Valverde’s triumph! The hero of the match against Manchester City officially named Champions League Player of the Week
UEFA has officially announced the name of the best player of the week following the first legs of the Champions League Round of 16.
Details: The prestigious award went to Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde. The Uruguayan playmaker was the chief architect of the sensational rout of Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabéu, leaving other star contenders in his wake.
Valverde beat out serious competition for the Player of the Week honor, with each nominee delivering a standout performance. The shortlist included Julián Álvarez from Atlético, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from PSG, and Michael Olise from Bayern.
Valverde’s crowning achievement was a historic hat-trick against Manchester City. His clinical finishing powered Los Blancos to a commanding 3-0 victory, all but guaranteeing Madrid a comfortable advantage heading into the return leg.
Although all the nominees tallied three points apiece using the goal+assist metric, Valverde’s hat-trick in a match of this magnitude left no doubt among the voters.
Reminder: Jérémy Doku is confident that Manchester City can beat Real Madrid.
