Unity Cup to Usher in New Era for Nigeria Under Eric Chelle
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has confirmed that the upcoming Unity Cup in London will serve as a springboard for introducing fresh talent and testing new tactical ideas ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Fresh Faces on the Horizon
Chelle, who took over in January 2025, revealed plans to expand his player pool following the debut of four new players in last month’s qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
“It will give us the chance to try out a few new players in different roles. We need to strengthen our squad ahead of September and October’s qualifiers,” said the Nigerian boss.
Unity Cup Fixtures
- Dates: 27 May – 31 May 2025
- Venue: Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford, London

The mini-tournament offers Chelle a rare chance to fine-tune combinations and assess squad depth in a competitive setting.
Troost-Ekong Emphasizes Team Bonding
Vice-captain William Troost-Ekong welcomed the tournament’s timing, saying:
“This is a great tournament for us to reunite and continue strategizing for the upcoming World Cup qualifying games.”
September in Sight
With a mixed start to the qualifiers — a 2-0 win over Rwanda followed by a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe — the Unity Cup is shaping up to be a critical moment in Chelle’s rebuild, as Nigeria eyes a stronger run in the next round of qualifiers.
