Unexpected escape! Cole Palmer receives huge boost after Chelsea red card nightmare
Chelsea have received an unexpected boost following Cole Palmer's disastrous evening against Tottenham. Despite receiving the first red card of his professional career, the England international will not miss the upcoming Premier League showdown with Manchester United.
Details: According to Manchester Evening News, Palmer will be available for Chelsea's Premier League encounter against Manchester United on October 31. The 24-year-old received two yellow cards during Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, resulting in an automatic one-match suspension. However, English disciplinary regulations allow red-card suspensions to be served across domestic competitions. Palmer will therefore miss Wednesday's Carabao Cup fourth-round meeting with Liverpool on October 28, leaving him eligible to face United.
Palmer's dismissal came during a frustrating London derby at Stamford Bridge on October 24. Referee Chris Kavanagh first booked the midfielder following a confrontation involving Mateus Fernandes in the 71st minute. Nine minutes later, Palmer committed another reckless challenge, this time on former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. The referee produced a second yellow card, leaving the Blues with ten players.
Tottenham eventually secured a 2-0 victory, with an own goal from goalkeeper Mike Penders and a late strike from Mathys Tel. After the match, Palmer publicly apologised for his behaviour and acknowledged that he needed to learn from the incident. Head coach Xabi Alonso also stressed the importance of emotional control during difficult moments. The midfielder's availability against Manchester United will nevertheless provide an important attacking option.
It's worth noting that Premier League red-card suspensions also apply to the FA Cup and EFL Cup, unlike bans for accumulating yellow cards. A dismissal for two bookings normally carries a one-match suspension. Palmer will serve that punishment at Anfield before becoming eligible again for the October 31 league fixture. His selection will remain at Alonso's discretion.
Reminder: A serious blow for Alonso. Chelsea's leader not even named in the squad for the Tottenham clash.
