Fenerbahçe’s long-awaited return to the Champions League has already taken a disciplinary turn.

Details: Fenerbahçe have officially announced that UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the club as well as Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood following the Champions League play-off second leg against Lyon. The Turkish side stated that it will defend the rights and interests of both players and the club before the relevant UEFA disciplinary bodies.

According to Fenerbahçe, all necessary information, documents and legal arguments concerning the case will be submitted to UEFA, while the Istanbul club will continue to closely monitor further developments.

The proceedings are connected with the chaotic scenes that followed Fenerbahçe’s 2-1 away victory over Lyon on August 26. That result sent the Turkish giants into the Champions League league phase with a 3-2 aggregate win after the first leg in Istanbul had ended 1-1.

A confrontation involving players and staff broke out after the final whistle. Guendouzi was at the centre of the post-match tension, while Fenerbahçe’s latest statement also confirms that Greenwood is now formally involved in UEFA’s disciplinary process. The club did not specify the individual allegations against either player in its announcement.

It is worth noting that Greenwood has played six Champions League matches for Fenerbahçe this season, scoring two goals and providing one assist. Guendouzi has also featured in six European matches, completing 540 minutes on the pitch.

Reminder: Official! He could have moved to the Premier League, but chose Turkey
