FIFA president Gianni Infantino has announced a new role for the president of the United States of America, Donald Trump.

Details: In the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup, which will be held this year in North America, FIFA president Gianni Infantino revealed that US president Donald Trump will take on a special role.

US President Trump will present the trophy to the 2026 World Cup winner, Infantino announced.

The tournament, which many expect to become one of the most-watched events in football history, will culminate with the final on July 19. After the final whistle, in front of a packed stadium, Donald Trump will present the World Cup trophy to the champions. Infantino himself commented:

This trophy will be handed out on [Jul. 19, 2026] to the captain of the team who will win the World Cup. I will give it together with the President of the United States, the host country. Nobody can touch this trophy.
