Tragedy in the ring! Wrestler arrested after referee dies mid-match
A routine main event turned into a nightmare in central Mexico. What began as an evening of lucha libre entertainment ended with a veteran referee dead in the ring and a wrestler in police custody.
Details: During the main event of an El Patrón Espectáculos show at the Centro Deportivo Cultural 11 de Julio in Mineral de la Reforma, Hidalgo, in the early hours of October 7, wrestler El Hijo de Fishman delivered a double underhook piledriver, known in Mexico as a martinete, to referee Gerardo Germán Pineda, better known as El Búho. The 75-year-old official never got back to his feet. The 36-year-old wrestler was arrested at the venue and turned over to the Hidalgo State Attorney General's Office, which is investigating the case as possible manslaughter. He faces a hearing within 48 hours to determine whether he will be formally charged, and if convicted, a prison sentence of five to fifteen years.
Perhaps the most chilling details concern what happened after the move. According to local reports relayed by veteran lucha libre observers, El Búho lay unmoving on the mat for minutes before anyone checked on him, with those at ringside initially believing he was selling the spot as part of the show. There was reportedly no ambulance or medical personnel on hand at the event, even though such provision is mandatory for wrestling shows in Hidalgo, and the card was running somewhat under the radar. When paramedics finally arrived, they could only confirm that Pineda had passed away. The promotion later issued a statement confirming it has arranged legal assistance for El Hijo de Fishman and that its legal representative remains in contact with the referee's family, while asking fans and media to avoid spreading rumours while the investigation continues.
It's worth noting that El Búho was no anonymous official. Gerardo Germán Pineda had spent nearly three decades refereeing in Hidalgo after previously working for around 15 years as a wrestler under the name El Búho Negro II, and over the course of his career he officiated matches involving genuine legends of Mexican wrestling, including Mil Máscaras, Canek, Dos Caras, El Hijo del Santo, Último Guerrero and Blue Panther. The case now sits with the prosecutor's office, and the coming hearing will decide whether the man who stepped into the ring as El Hijo de Fishman, son of a lucha libre dynasty, will face trial for the death of a man who dedicated half a century to the same ring.
Reminder: RIP. An era has come to an end! The man who returned Spain to the Tour de France podium has died.
