"Told me to go to nightclubs": Emmanuel Petit shares a life lesson from Arsène Wenger
Former Arsenal and France midfielder Emmanuel Petit opened up on That Peter Crouch Podcast about a valuable life lesson imparted by his legendary coach, Arsène Wenger.
Wenger and Petit began their collaboration at Monaco, where Wenger introduced Petit to professional football. Later, in 1997, Wenger brought Petit to Arsenal, where they shared great success and numerous victories.
Petit recalled his debut in Ligue 1 with Monaco, an excellent performance against Sochaux. However, the following day, Wenger noticed Petit seemed downcast and took him aside for a conversation.
Wenger emphasized that before discovering what kind of player Petit could become on the pitch, it was essential to understand the kind of person he could become off it. Wenger encouraged Petit to appreciate the beauty of life and the people around him.
"We know that every single when you finish your training session you go back home. Every time you finish the game you go back home. You don't have a life. You live alone in the dark," Wenger observed.
Wenger’s advice was a call for Petit to embrace life outside football—socializing, meeting people, enjoying drinks, and even going to nightclubs. Wenger wanted Petit to break free from his isolated routine.
Petit admitted that this brief conversation profoundly changed his outlook on life, helping him find a balance between football and personal fulfillment.
