To sign Wirtz, Real Madrid will have to break the transfer record. What amount are we talking about?

One of Real Madrid’s primary transfer targets is Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz. Unlike signings like Kylian Mbappé and potential Alphonso Davies, the Spanish giants won’t be able to acquire the German talent for free. In fact, they may need to break their transfer record to land him.

Details: Wirtz has been linked with a move to Real Madrid since before the last transfer window. While the player himself was open to a transfer, he ultimately stayed at Leverkusen. Although his father previously denied rumors that his son was considering an offer from Real Madrid, the club in Spain remains keen on signing the midfielder.

According to Christian Falk, Bayer Leverkusen is taking a firm stance, demanding no less than €150 million for Wirtz. Should Real Madrid be willing to pay that amount, it would become the most expensive transfer in the club’s history.

Reminder: Real Madrid’s current transfer record is the signing of Eden Hazard from Chelsea in 2019 for €120.8 million. The top three also include Jude Bellingham’s transfer from Borussia Dortmund last season for €113 million, and Gareth Bale’s €101 million move from Tottenham in 2013.

Notably, Wirtz’s transfer could not only be the most expensive purchase in *Los Blancos* history but also one of the biggest deals overall. Among Real Madrid’s top sales are Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Juventus for €117 million in 2018, Ángel Di María’s transfer to Manchester United for €75 million in 2014, and Casemiro’s €70.65 million sale to Manchester United in 2022.

For context, the most expensive transfer in football history is Neymar’s €222 million move from Barcelona to PSG. This summer, PSG was reportedly ready to break that record by offering €250 million for Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, though Barcelona rejected the offer.
