Time for prison? Mbappé caught up in corruption scandal
A major corruption scandal has erupted around Kylian Mbappé and his family.
Details: According to L'Équipe, the mother of the Real Madrid superstar, Fayza Lamari, was questioned by three investigating judges in Paris on October 9 as part of a corruption investigation involving Mohamed Sanhadji, the former security chief of the French national team. Investigators suspect Lamari of asking Sanhadji to use his connections to help obtain four visas. Following the hearing, she was placed under the status of an assisted witness.
This legal status means that judges have identified indications of possible involvement in the alleged offenses, but the evidence is not sufficient to justify formal charges. Lamari has therefore not been formally charged.
However, the investigation has also reached Kylian Mbappé himself. The French superstar was questioned by police over a €60,300 payment he made to Sanhadji in 2023. Investigators are examining the circumstances of this transaction, as well as a subsequent trip to Cameroon during which Sanhadji accompanied the footballer.
The authorities are trying to establish whether the former security official provided private services outside his professional duties. Sanhadji has been formally placed under investigation on allegations including corruption and influence peddling. Mbappé, however, has not been formally charged, and his questioning does not establish any wrongdoing.
It is worth noting that Mohamed Sanhadji worked in the security setup of the French national team from 2004 until 2026. He was a familiar figure around several generations of French internationals before becoming the central figure in this investigation.
