‘Three months to a year in prison is too much,’ Amara Traoré protests against the sentences handed down to Senegalese supporters in Morocco
The former coach of the Lions of Teranga considers the sentences against the 18 supporters in Rabat to be harsh.
Amara Traoré broke his silence the day after the sentences were handed down to his compatriots in Morocco. The Senegalese tactician believes these sentences go beyond the realm of sport. ‘No one expected these sentences. It goes beyond the realm of football. Three months to a year in prison is too much,’ he said.
In his view, the Senegalese sentenced in Rabat should not be seen as mere participants in a football-related incident. Faced with this situation, the former Senegal coach is calling for peaceful popular mobilisation.
‘Today, they are heroes, soldiers. I call for a peaceful national march, where everyone comes out with the flag. Let the country rise up as one. Morocco must come to its senses,’ said Amara Traoré.
Arrested during the incidents at the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco on 18 January 2026, the 18 supporters appeared before the judge of the Rabat Court of First Instance on Thursday 19 February and were sentenced to terms ranging from three months to one year.
