The England national team are currently preparing for the World Cup and playing a series of friendlies, but there are already concerns over squad fitness.

Details: Head coach Thomas Tuchel revealed in a press conference that Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice both wanted to feature in the most recent match, but the decision was made not to take the risk, as they were experiencing discomfort.

Quote: “Saka and Rice wanted to be on the pitch… but taking that kind of risk made no sense for us or for them. They were clearly feeling discomfort. There was a risk the situation could worsen,” Tuchel stated.

The manager also confirmed that winger Noni Madueke has picked up a minor injury and will be sidelined for a few days, meaning he will miss the next match.

England drew 1–1 with Uruguay and now face Japan in another friendly on Tuesday, March 31, with kick-off scheduled for 20:45 CET.

Reminder: The friendly between England and Uruguay was overshadowed by a shocking incident early in the second half involving Phil Foden.
