Enzo Maresca endured a nightmare debut as Manchester City’s head coach. In his very first match in charge of the English giants, the Italian manager suffered a crushing 0-3 defeat at the hands of Arsenal in the Community Shield.

According to Opta, Maresca became only the second manager in City’s history to lose his debut by a margin of at least three goals. The previous instance dates all the way back to 1906, when Harry Newbould made his debut with a 1-4 loss to Arsenal.

Thus, Maresca’s start at City could hardly have been more painful — not only did his side fall to one of their main rivals, but they also failed to score a single goal. To make matters worse, the match was for a prestigious trophy that traditionally kicks off the new English football season.

For Arsenal, the victory was also a repeat of a historic result. The 3-0 thrashing marks the largest margin of victory in a Community Shield match since 2014 — when the Gunners also beat Manchester City by the same scoreline.
