This day in history: Five years since Kobe Bryant's passing
January 26 is a sombre day for the basketball world, as it marks the loss of one of the sport's most iconic figures.
Details: Exactly five years ago, on January 26, 2020, the helicopter carrying Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant crashed 48 kilometres from Los Angeles. Among the passengers were Kobe, his daughter Gianna, and seven others.
Following news of the tragedy, a spontaneous memorial formed near the Lakers’ home arena, where fans left nearly 25,000 candles, 5,000 posters and letters, 500 stuffed animals, 350 pairs of shoes, and 14 banners.
In January 2022, a bronze statue was unveiled at the crash site, with several other commemorative landmarks established across California.
Reminder: Kobe Bryant’s legacy includes five NBA championships, 18 All-Star appearances, 15 All-NBA selections, 12 All-Defensive Team honours, the 2008 NBA MVP award, and two NBA Finals MVPs.
