There are two closing dates for the summer transfer window in England. What is it?

14 June will mark not only the start of the European Championship, but also the opening of the summer transfer window in the English Premier League. From today clubs can register new transfers, but the dates of the transfer window closing each team determines itself.

In general, the closing of the summer transfer window in its traditional sense will happen on 31 August, and clubs until that time can safely both sell and buy players. But for some teams, another date will be much more important.

That date is 30 June - the day of the close of the financial year in England. It is the clubs profit on this date that is used to calculate whether the club meets the requirements of profit and sustainability (or simply financial fair-play).

Therefore, clubs at risk of failing to meet these requirements have only 16 days to make player sales in order to register a profit of £105 million over the last three years, which will allow the club to avoid being dropped points or other penalties.

Actually, Everton and Nottingham Forest were stripped of points for breaching the profit and sustainability requirements in the 2023/2024 season. There are now six Premier League clubs at risk of deduction of points, including the aforementioned teams.
