The Sri Lankan national cricket team has appointed a new head coach
At the last T20 World Cup, the Sri Lankan national cricket team failed to advance past the group stage, finishing in third place and exiting the tournament. As a result, they decided to change their head coach.
Details: Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the full-time head coach of the Sri Lankan team. He will serve in this role until the T20 World Cup in 2026. Jayasuriya had been coaching the team since July 2024 in an interim capacity, but now he has been appointed without that designation.
Under Jayasuriya's leadership in recent months, Sri Lanka achieved significant victories, including their first ODI bilateral series win against India in 27 years, an away Test victory against England for the first time in a decade, and a recent 2-0 thrashing of New Zealand in a home Test series. These successes have provided the team with a chance to qualify for the upcoming World Cup.
Quote: "The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision in light of the team's strong performances in recent series against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as interim head coach," stated the board's announcement.
Reminder: Sri Lankan player Praveen Jayawickrama has been suspended from play for one year after admitting to obstructing an anti-corruption investigation.
