Tragic news continues to emerge from the 2024 Road Cycling World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland. Following the death of 18-year-old Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer, it has now been reported that Dutch cyclist Bas van Belle has also passed away.

Details: The Royal Dutch Cycling Union (KNWU) confirmed van Belle’s death in an official statement. While the specific circumstances remain undisclosed, the announcement described his passing as "unexpected."

Quote: "KNWU has learned of the unexpected passing of Bas van Belle with great sorrow and sadness. We mourn his loss. Bas leaves a huge void in the world of cycling. Our thoughts are with his family, especially his parents, siblings Lise and Lo, his friends, and all who knew Bas. We will remember him as a warm, friendly person and a talented cyclist."

Additional Information: Bas van Belle was the elder brother of cycling star Lo van Belle (22), who races for Team Jumbo-Visma and has competed in the Tour de France. His sister Lise (20) is also a cyclist, having won bronze at the Paris Olympics this summer in track cycling.

Bas van Belle raced for Luxembourg’s Leopard Pro Cycling team in 2019 and 2020 before returning to the Dutch team Wielerploeg Groot Amsterdam. In 2023, he secured third place in the Tour of Okinawa in Japan and in a stage of the Course Cycliste de Solidarnosc in Poland. His last race was at Ronde Midden-Brabant in the Netherlands.
