The rains ruined everything. Olympic triathlon training session canceled in Paris
On Friday, July 26, the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games took place in Paris. The show was quite spectacular, with many innovations, but was slightly marred by rain. Athletes floated along the Seine on boats, many of them donning protective raincoats.
In addition to affecting the opening ceremony, the rain also impacted the competitions. The triathlon events, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 30, were particularly affected. Athletes were supposed to swim a portion of the race in the Seine. Today's planned practice session was canceled due to deteriorating water quality in the river.
The water in the Seine had been tested before the Olympics and deemed safe for swimming. However, the continuous rain over the past 48 hours worsened the water quality.
The organization responsible for conducting water quality tests and the International Triathlon Union determined that the standard had fallen below acceptable levels.
In a statement from the Olympic Committee and the World Triathlon Federation, it was noted:
"Tests conducted in the Seine have revealed a level of water quality that the International Triathlon Union considers insufficient to ensure the safety of the event.
This is due to the rains that hit Paris on July 26 and 27.
Given the weather forecast for the next 48 hours, the Olympic Committee and the International Triathlon Union are confident that the water quality will return to acceptable levels before the triathlon events begin."
The triathlon competitions will be held over three different days. The men's individual race will take place on July 30, the women's individual race on July 31, and the mixed relay on August 5. A total of 110 athletes from 55 countries will participate in the events.
