Former world number one Iga Swiatek missed several tournaments in September, citing "personal reasons" as the cause. However, the truth behind her absence has now been revealed, shedding light on the real reason she was unable to compete.
Details: According to a press release from the International Tennis Integrity Agency, Swiatek was given a one-month suspension from tennis due to a positive doping test in August 2024. The tests revealed that the Polish player had traces of the banned substance trimetazidine in her blood.
The suspension was relatively short because the substance had entered her system accidentally, through a sleep aid sold in Poland. Swiatek reached a deal with anti-doping authorities, admitted her mistake, and was suspended from September 22 to October 4. This period also includes an eight-day suspension from September 12 to 22, while the investigation was ongoing.
Reminder: Swiatek missed tournaments in Beijing and Seoul, which coincided with the time of the investigation.
