The leader remains in the fold! Mamelodi Sundowns to keep key defender after serious injury

South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns are closing in on an extension for their long-serving defensive leader, Mothobi Mvala.

Details: The experienced centre-back has represented the Brazilians since 2020, forming a formidable partnership at the heart of the defence alongside Grant Kekana. The latest chapter of his career has proved an extremely difficult test: following major knee surgery, Mvala missed the final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup, making just two appearances this season.

Despite his serious fitness problems, the club's hierarchy in Chloorkop considers the veteran's leadership qualities and influence in the dressing room indispensable to the squad and is therefore pushing to extend his contract, which expires in June. Head coach Miguel Cardoso has also spoken enthusiastically about his player's progress:

“Mothobi is training with the team, but not for very long yet. Considering the long-term injury he suffered, it is not only about his return to training, but also his return to peak form.”

It is worth noting that over six years with Mamelodi Sundowns, Mothobi Mvala has made 119 appearances in all competitions, scoring 7 goals and providing 4 assists.
