The Irish boxer won her second consecutive Olympic gold and has decided to retire from her career
On Wednesday, August 7, the final bout of the women's boxing tournament in the 60 kg weight category took place.
The gold medal was claimed by Irish representative Kellie Harrington. Immediately afterward, she announced her retirement from the sport. Harrington began her boxing career in 2006, securing her greatest achievement at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by winning the gold medal in the women's lightweight division.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kellie Harrington successfully defended her Olympic champion title, winning her second consecutive gold medal. She has now decided to retire from boxing and focus on her personal life.
"This was my last fight; I am done. I always said I wanted to retire as a champion. Gold gives hope to all those children, all those teenagers. It gives hope to the people of Ireland. But this medal was won for myself," Harrington told the Irish broadcaster RTE.
Harrington retires undefeated in Olympic competition, with four victories in both Tokyo and Paris.
For context, Cuban wrestler Lopez won his fifth consecutive gold medal at the Olympics at the age of 41.
