Now, Messi and Maradona will grace the nation’s banknote.

Details: Today, the Central Bank of Argentina announced that, in anticipation of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, they have decided to issue a special 100,000-peso banknote featuring two legends of both Argentine and world football—Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.

With this gesture, Argentine authorities aim to pay tribute to these footballers for their immense contributions to the sport’s popularity and for bringing global recognition to their country.

Diego Maradona played 91 matches for the Argentina national team, scoring 34 goals. His crowning achievement with the national squad was winning the 1986 World Cup.

As for Messi, he has earned 196 caps for Argentina, netting 115 goals. In 2022, Messi led Argentina to World Cup glory, and in the 2020/21 and 2023/24 seasons, Leo and the national team lifted the Copa América trophy.
