The Former Tottenham Striker Apologizes for Comments About Supporting Al Ahly in Club World Cup
Ahmed Hossam, also known as "Mido," a famous Egyptian soccer player who used to play for teams like Zamalek and Ajax, has said sorry for saying he won't support Al Ahly in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
The most successful club in Egypt, Al Ahly, will participate in the tournament's enlarged format. They have been drawn into Group A and will play FC Porto, Palmeiras, and Inter Miami. Their first game against Lionel Messi's squad is set for June.
During a recent interview on On Time Sports, Mido expressed his allegiance to Zamalek, stating he would not support Al Ahly in the tournament. The remarks sparked outrage among Al Ahly fans, who perceived them as disrespectful.
Mido explained his intentions and expressed regret for the timing of his remarks during a subsequent appearance: "I spoke naturally, but I understand the timing was inappropriate." I regret saying these things while Al Ahly is the "star of the occasion" and in central position.
He emphasized his respect for Al Ahly and its fans, adding, “While I remain a loyal Zamalek supporter, Al Ahly represents Egypt on the global stage, and I have always acknowledged their achievements.”
Mido also addressed the controversy on his X account, reiterating his stance but acknowledging the need for better judgment in timing such statements.
The former Marseille and Celta Vigo striker concluded by underscoring the mutual respect between Zamalek and Al Ahly fans, despite the fierce rivalry: “Both sets of supporters understand the value of healthy competition and share a common pride in representing Egyptian football.”
