The Algerian national team has appointed a new head coach. As reported by the Algerian Football Federation, the helm of the national team has been entrusted to the renowned specialist, Vladimir Petkovic.

The coach will prepare the African squad for the qualification matches of the 2026 World Cup. The duration of the collaboration has not been disclosed.

The Swiss coach of Bosnian origin has been without a job since February 2022, after leaving French club Bordeaux.

The 60-year-old specialist is best known for his work with the Swiss national team and Lazio. Petkovic led the Red Crusaders for seven years. Under his guidance, the red and whites reached the quarterfinals of Euro 2020. Together with the coach, Lazio won the Italian Cup in 2013.

The Algerian national team failed in the 2023 African Cup of Nations, finishing last in their group. Following such a performance, the then head coach, Djamel Belmadi, lost his job.
