The ex-West Ham captain, now an Arsenal star, distinguished himself with a touching act
Last summer, Arsenal bought Declan Rice's contract from West Ham for €166.6 million. In the previous season, the midfielder had already become a star at his new club. However, the player has not forgotten his roots and has shown a heartwarming gesture.
The story revolves around Oscar Fairs, a product of West Ham's youth academy, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor—ependymoma - in August of last year. The 14-year-old goalkeeper has already undergone seven surgeries, as well as one course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Currently, Fairs is part of a European multi-targeted metronomic anti-cancer trial for medulloblastoma in Lille, and his family is aiming to raise £100,000 for his treatment.
Declan Rice couldn't ignore the situation and donated £5,000 to help fund the young player's treatment. Other key West Ham players have also joined in. Team co-owner David Sullivan donated £10,000, former striker Robert Snodgrass contributed £1,000, and current defender Kortney Hause added £500.
Oscar Fairs' mother, Natalie, expressed her gratitude for the donations to her son's treatment fund.
"I can't find words big or strong enough to [describe] the immense generosity of people," she said in an interview with Essex Echo.
