The England national team has matched a 70-year-old negative record
England repeated a 70-year-old unwanted record just days before Euro 2024. The national team's final warm-up match before the tournament did not go as planned, as Gareth Southgate's side suffered a 0-1 defeat to Iceland at Wembley.
Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson put Iceland ahead in the 12th minute, and the score remained unchanged. Even if England had equalized, they would still have matched the negative record that has stood for 70 years.
Southgate's team conceded the first goal in three consecutive matches at Wembley for the first time since November 1954. This year, England lost 0-1 to Brazil in March, and then, a few days later, they conceded first in a 2-2 draw with Belgium.
There were some disgruntled murmurs from the crowd at Wembley during halftime, which grew louder at the final whistle.
