SC Magdeburg head coach Bennet Wiegert shared a harrowing story in an interview with SPORT BILD about how one of his players came dangerously close to death during the Christmas market tragedy on December 20, 2024.

Wiegert recalled that as soon as he heard about the attack, he immediately messaged the entire team in a WhatsApp group, asking every player to check in. The first to respond was Sergey Hernández, who urged him to call Spanish newcomer Antonio Serradilla.

"He was there. The attacker drove past him at barely a meter’s distance. Then I called Antonio, and he was just screaming and crying. I wanted to go straight to his house, but my wife stopped me and reminded me that I was needed here first," Wiegert recounted.

On December 20, 2024, a horrific attack took place at the Christmas market in Magdeburg. The assailant, Taleb A., drove a vehicle into a crowd, killing six people and injuring hundreds more. The perpetrator was immediately arrested and is currently being held at Leipzig prison.
