Tennis icon Rafael Nadal has been honored with an honorary doctorate from the prestigious University of Salamanca. However, according to El País, the decision faced significant opposition from the academic community.

Such honorary titles are typically granted with overwhelming support, yet in Nadal’s case, 91 out of 268 scholars voted against it—amounting to 34% opposition.

Critics argue that Nadal had no prior affiliation with the university or academic contributions, and that his sporting achievements alone do not justify the honor.

His nomination was put forward by university rector José Manuel Corchado, who has a controversial reputation. Some speculate that Corchado’s decision was driven by a desire to boost his own public image and attract media attention.

Nadal retired from professional tennis last fall, concluding a legendary career with 92 titles, including 22 Grand Slam victories.
