The potential transfer of Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams to Barcelona was one of the major transfer sagas of the summer. However, the Spanish international winger ultimately remained with his hometown club, and La Liga president Javier Tebas has shared his thoughts on the matter.
Details: Tebas confirmed that Barcelona indeed attempted to sign Williams, but expressed his satisfaction that such a talented player stayed at Athletic Bilbao, which he believes enhances the team's competitiveness.
Quote:
"Barça wanted Nico Williams, but they couldn't sign him. I'm very happy that he’s still at Athletic and still in Spain. I’m pleased about it because it adds competitiveness to the league".
Reminder: Barcelona’s sporting director Deco had previously stated that the club did not sign Williams because they have other players in mind for his position.
Nico Williams was one of the heroes of Spain's triumphant Euro 2024 campaign, scoring in the final against England and contributing two goals and one assist in total during the tournament. However, in the first four rounds of La Liga 2024/25, the 22-year-old winger has yet to register any goals or assists.
