Sundowns Defender Zuko Mdunyelwa Faces Uncertain Future Amid January Transfer Window
Mamelodi Sundowns are thinking about what to do with their defender Zuko Mdunyelwa, who hasn’t been playing much. They might send him on loan when the January transfer window opens.
The 25-year-old right-back joined Sundowns in January 2023 from Chippa United but hasn’t gotten many chances to play this season because of strong competition. Mdunyelwa has made just three appearances across all competitions, including one start in the CAF Champions League and two substitute appearances in the Betway Premiership.
With Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena excelling in the right-back position, Mdunyelwa has found it challenging to break into the lineup. Mudau has scored two goals in 15 matches this season, while Morena has played 16 games and scored one goal.
The new head coach, Miguel Cardoso, has made things harder for Mdunyelwa. Cardoso, who took over from Manqoba Mngqithi, has said he’s worried about having too many players in the team and plans to let some of them go.
Someone close to the team said, “Zuko Mdunyelwa is one of the players who might be sent out on loan. The new coach has said reducing the squad size is important, and it’s difficult for Zuko to compete with players like Morena and Mudau.”
While it’s not yet clear where Mdunyelwa might go, his skills mean other teams will likely be interested in him. “If the loan happens, Zuko won’t be short of options,” the source added.
The January window presents an opportunity for the defender to secure regular game time and continue his development, while Sundowns streamline their squad for the remainder of the season.
