Sterling under fire, 'losing fans' after Aston Villa draw
Arsenal let a two-goal lead slip away to Aston Villa on Saturday. The 2-2 draw left their title ambitions in doubt and sparked renewed criticism of Raheem Sterling.
The 30-year-old Raheem Sterling, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea in August, is yet to score in the Premier League. His move to Mikel Arteta was supposed to help revive his career, but the result remains disappointing for many, the Mirror reports.
Sterling came on as a substitute in the 82nd minute against Aston Villa, with Arsenal already losing their lead. His involvement in the game was limited to a yellow card for a foul in injury time. With the team drawing their eighth game of the season and falling six points behind leaders Liverpool, criticism of the player has intensified.
Former Chelsea striker Pat Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live:
"Raheem Sterling has lost the support of the fans. He's really struggling at the moment."
Earlier in the week, Sterling had a more confident performance against Tottenham as Arsenal won 2-1.
Arteta praised the player's progress:
"We're getting more out of Raheem than we were a few weeks ago. His involvement has increased significantly and he's going to be a great player. He's getting more minutes and more rhythm now. He's slowly recovering from his injury and I'm sure he can give a lot to the team," the Gunners manager said.
