Spain vs England Predicted line-ups and latest news for the Euro 2024 final match
Today, we anticipate the final match of the 2024 European Championship. The national teams of Spain and England will compete for the gold medals.
Spain was ranked fourth among the tournament favorites by Opta, but they defied expectations throughout the competition. Scoring five goals and conceding none in the group stage, they secured the top spot in their group and advanced to the playoffs. They then achieved a commanding victory over Georgia (4-1) and a dramatic win against Germany in extra time (2-1). In the semifinals, La Furia Roja secured another hard-fought victory against France (2-1).
England was considered the main favorite long before the tournament began. They demonstrated a pragmatic style of play from their first match. Although they topped their group, it was only by virtue of one win and two draws. In the playoffs, the Three Lions secured a last-minute draw against Slovakia and then triumphed in extra time. They won against Switzerland in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals, and a last-minute goal granted them victory over the Netherlands.
Spain enters this match with some losses. Barcelona midfielder Pedri, injured in the match against Germany, and Real Betis forward Ayoze Pérez, injured just before the final, are both sidelined.
It is worth noting that disciplinary sanctions are reset before the final, so no player will miss the match due to yellow or red card suspensions.
In a pre-match interview, Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente stated that it is impossible to determine a favorite. He also mentioned that the outcome of today’s match would not affect him personally.
“There is no favorite for tomorrow’s match; we leave that to the bookmakers.
This match will not change my life because I am clear about who I am and what it means to fight. I much prefer seeing happy people, and we enthusiastically and excitedly see a country showing signs of harmony and unity, something we haven't seen in a long time.”
Meanwhile, England’s head coach Gareth Southgate acknowledged the high level of Spain’s play but emphasized that his team has improved in recent matches.
“Spain has a very clear style of play. They are a cohesive team that presses very well with high intensity.
Spain excels at ball possession, so we need to be well-organized against them. But we have also been excellent in possession, especially in our recent games.”
This will be Spain’s fourth European Championship final. Notably, they won in all three previous finals, including back-to-back victories in 2008 and 2012, a feat unmatched by any other team. England is participating in the Euro final for the second consecutive time. Last time, in 2021, they were unable to overcome Italy in a penalty shootout. The main continental trophy has never been claimed by the Three Lions.
