In the opening round of the COSAFA Cup group stage, South Africa faced off against Mozambique. However, the tournament hosts endured a disappointing start.
The South Africans dominated possession throughout the match, while Mozambique relied on swift counterattacks—a strategy that proved quite effective. In the 57th minute, the visitors found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Seventeen minutes later, though, Mozambique managed to score again, and this time it counted.
South Africa pushed hard to find an equalizer but to no avail. Despite registering nine attempts, they failed to land a single shot on target.
As a result, South Africa opens their COSAFA Cup campaign with a 0-1 defeat to Mozambique. The next match for South Africa is against Zimbabwe on June 7, while Mozambique will take on Mauritius that same day.
