Slot failed to secure first trophy: Liverpool lost to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final

Liverpool and Newcastle clashed at Wembley for the EFL Cup title in the tournament's final match.

It was a chance for Arne Slot to win his first trophy at the helm of the Merseyside team, but he couldn't achieve it.

The first half was a complete disappointment for Slot's charges. Not only did the Reds go into halftime trailing by a narrow margin (0-1), they also failed to make a single shot on target against the Magpies. Dan Burn put Newcastle ahead at the very end of the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the pattern on the field did not change drastically. The Magpies scored a second time, but Alexander Isak's goal was disallowed due to offside.

However, the Swede didn't dwell on it for long and within a minute doubled his team's advantage. The Reds had no response, among Federico Chiesa's goal.

For Newcastle, this victory was historic — they claimed the Carabao Cup for the first time ever. Additionally, it was the first trophy for the Magpies in 70 years in the England.

Liverpool remains the most decorated team in the history of the tournament (10 victories).
