A night of vandalism has cast a shadow over football in Vallecas.

Details: Rayo Vallecano have announced that an assault took place at the Estadio de Vallecas during the early hours of Saturday morning. According to the club, the authorities' box inside the stadium was vandalized and left badly damaged.

The Madrid club published images showing the aftermath inside the venue and said the incident had already been reported to the relevant authorities. Rayo confirmed that the case will move to the next stage at the beginning of the week.

On Monday, Rayo Vallecano intend to file a formal complaint and submit footage recorded by the stadium's security cameras. The club said it expects the authorities to act with diligence and determination following what it considers an unacceptable assault on its headquarters.

Rayo also described the incident as another episode in what the club calls a campaign of harassment, extortion and intimidation against president Raúl Martín Presa, his family and the institution since July 28. That characterization comes from the club's statement, while responsibility for the vandalism has not yet been officially established.

The incident occurred only hours before the Trofeo de Vallecas against Cagliari, which the club said would go ahead as planned and return to the stadium after a seven-year absence. It is also worth noting that Rayo Vallecano's next LaLiga fixture is scheduled for October 10 at home against Athletic Club.

Reminder: El Clasico could be postponed. What happened?
